PVT. URIAH BROWN
Company G, 30th Ohio Infantry
Vicksburg, Miss.
22 May 1863
Pvt Brown was tasked with charging forward while carrying a Log then placing a log across a defensive ditch dug by Confederate troops.
The hail of enemy musket fire and cannon balls hade forward progress almost impossible and most of the party were wounded or killed. In spite of his captain falling at his side during the assault, Brown continued forward to place his log over the ditch.
Brown along with the rest of the engineer party was shot and fell into the water.
With 5 wounded men besides himself floundering in the muddy ditch, Brown knew he had to act or they would drown.
With complete disregard of his own wounds, not to mention the barrage of enemy fire focused on his position, Brown dragged all 5 of his comrades from the ditch and to medical aid.
