mcambellCmdr. McCampbell, and just 1 other aircraft, intercepted a formation of 60 enemy aircraft.

McCampbell shot down 9 Japanese planes and sent the enemy flight into confusion forcing the others to flee before a single aircraft could reach the fleet.

This was not the first-time young aviator engaged a much larger enemy force and came out victorious. Just a few weeks earlier McCampbell led his men in an engagement against  80 Japanese carrier-based aircraft who were preparing to attack US forces.  McCampbell personally splashed 7 enemy aircraft before the enemy broke and ran.

In addition to his Medal of Honor Cmdr McCampbell was also awarded the Navy Cross, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 Gold Stars and Air Medal, for previous combat actions.
