donaldsonDonaldson’s Regiment was advancing under intense enemy resistance when they were halted by fortified enemy positions who were entrenched on the crest of a hill before Landres-et St. Georges.

Sgt. Donaldson’s men took refuge in a sunken roadbed, but several wounded soldiers had been left out in the open.

Donaldson, of his own volition and in broad daylight in full view of enemy gunners, advanced to the crest of the hill, rescued one of his wounded comrades,

He returned 5 more times, under withering fire to recover a total of six wounded Americans.
