Dr. (Cpt) GEORGE W. MAtthews
Assistant Surgeon, 36th Inf, U.S. Vol.
Near Labo, Luzon, Philippine Islands
29 October 1899
American forces clashed with the enemy resulting in several casualties.
Dr. Mathews was operating out of a hasty field aid station, under heavy enemy fire, when he and his patients were swarmed and attacked by rebels.
This apparently angered the Dr. as he grabbed a rifle and used it like a Louisville Slugger to send the attackers fleeing back into the jungle.
