Lcpl Wheat’s unit was assigned to provide security for a See Bee crew operating a construction crane in the Dien Ban District, Quang Nam Province.
Once the Marines established security positions in a tree line adjacent to the worksite, Lcpl Wheat reconnoitered their rear for the possible infiltration of guerrillas.
As he returned to the friendly position, Wheat triggered a well concealed, bounding type, antipersonnel mine.
Hearing the hissing sound of a burning time fuse, he Shouted a warning to his comrades then threw himself onto the mine as the bounding charge detonated and absorbing the main explosion with his body.
He gallantly gave his life for his fellow Marines and his country.
