Lt MICHAEL P. MURPHY
SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 1
Naval Special Warfare Task Unit
Asadabad, Konar Province, Afghanistan
27 – 28 June 2005
As the leader of a special reconnaissance Team conducting a mission to locate a high-level anti-coalition militia leader, Lt Murphy demonstrated extraordinary heroism in the face of a numerically superior enemy force 28 June 2005.
Lt Murphy’s team was compromised and under attack by between 30 and 40 enemy fighters. Murphy and his men engaged the enemy dispatching several.
Murphy attempted to call for reinforcement and Exfil but the extreme terrain wouldn’t allow his signal to get beyond the peaks.
Lt. Michael Murphy fought his way into open terrain so he could transmit a call.
Completely exposed to enemy fire, Murphy maintained his position while he provided his location and requested immediate support for his team.
Then he once again engaged the enemy until he was mortally wounded.
